First of all I would like to wish you all a very happy new year! A new year often signifies a fresh start and new goals for many people including myself. For some of us, this means setting health goals, such as losing weight, eating healthier and starting an exercise routine. However with the corona virus pandemic, the health and fitness resolutions we make can be a lot harder now. With 3/4 of England currently placed in Tier 4, this means most of us can’t go to the gym or classes.  We are still allowed to exercise outdoors while maintaining social distancing, but for many like myself struggle to workout outside.

Some of you that follow me on Instagram, know that I gym and booked 1 to 1 sessions regularly. During the first national lockdown, the gyms have closed and I haven’t found the motivation to exercise outdoors. This resulted in me gaining 12kg! I know it’s a lot… but I know I will lose it again! Since I always need someone motivating me to workout, I had to find an alternative to my 2 weekly 1to1 sessions. I’ve now found a fun and motivating way to exercise from home! It’s the Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure game for the Nintendo Switch!

What is Ring Fit Adventure?

Ring Fit Adventure is a fitness action role-playing game (RPG) by Nintendo for their Nintendo Switch console. It was first released in October 2019. It’s so popular that it was sold out for months during the first lockdown due to the Covid pandemic. I’ve only got mine 2 months ago in October 2020. It currently retails at around £70 to £90. To look for the best price, I use Idealo. The game also comes with a leg strap and the Ring-Con (a Pilates ring) for the motion controllers.

How Ring Fit Adventure work?

When you start the game, the first thing you will notice is that it is very welcoming and colorful. Unlike Wii Fit’s very sterile approach, this game feels very lively and gives out a very positive energy. This kind of feeling gives me the gym atmosphere, which I have missed so much while the gyms have been closed.

In the adventure mode, which is the games main mode, you will be exploring a huge fantasy world and defeating enemies such as the main antagonist Dragaux with real-life exercises. The Ring Con and Leg strap tracks your movements to turn them into in-game movements, such as jogging, yoga poses and more. After each exercise course the game gives you the option to check your estimate pulse rate with the IR Motion Sensor on your controller.

If you don’t feel like the adventure mode, you can also build your sets to target specific areas of the body. To give you an idea, here is my setup when I feel like having a leg day or upper body day. You can customize it to suit your needs.

Apple watch tracking

Apple watch series 6 in gold with navy blue sports strap. The apple watch can track your Nintendo Ring Fit Adventure using Fintess Gaming under workout.
I use Fitness Gaming on my Apple watch to track my Ring Fit workout.

When I first got this game, I wasn’t sure how to track my exercise more accurately using my Apple watch Series 6. And I have notices many people are unaware that fitness games can be tracked using the “Fitness Gaming” in workout. You might have to scroll all the way down in workout then tap on “add workout” to add Fitness Gaming to your workout list.

Would I recommend Ring Fit Adventure?

I highly recommend it for people that need to be motivated by someone to workout like myself. I have been using this game to workout an hour daily and love it. I’ve bought this game during black Friday for £65.  With gyms being closed across most England and the uncertainty of things, I think the investment of £65 is totally worth it. My gym membership is about £30 per month so that’s basically 2 months worth of gym, but got the game forever and can use it whenever I want. Therefor in my opinion its a bargain if you four already have a Nintendo Switch. Here on the Isle of Wight, I know we have to book slots to go to the gym, when the gyms were open before we entered Tier 4. I found having to book and sticking to certain times very restrictive. Since the slot wasn’t long enough, I found myself having to rush through my workout, most the time not finishing my workout routine and therefore not enjoying going to the gym as I normally would. Now using the Ring Fit Adventure game I feel there is no time pressure and feel satisfied after my workout.

Since nutrition is also a very important aspect to think about when it comes to losing weight or staying fit, check out my article on Frozen vs Canned food and their nutritional value.
